Exploitation and Narrative Responsibility: Comparing Far Cry 3 and Tomb Raider
Recently, I had the opportunity to sit down and play through the entirety of the newest entry into the Far Cry games – a series which had, for the most part, eluded me up until this point. The most that I knew about the series as a whole was how highly touted the game’s graphics and presentation were, especially given that the first game was the premier for Crytek Studio’s new engine. Eight years’ worth of new developers, engines, and graphical updates later, and very little has changed. Far Cry 3 is a visually stunning game bursting with minor details that more than once left me breathless. It’s a gorgeous rush of ultra-violence and open-ending gameplay that is ultimately quite fun and engaging. All of this is enhanced by a thematically rich plot that merits a great deal of discussion regarding its themes, ideas, moral stance, and place within the medium of gaming as a whole.

Quality Time With Lara Croft - Tomb Raider Hands-On

How Crystal Dynamics is reinventing Tomb Raider
Lara Croft has been around for 16 years, and in video game time, that’s an eternity. In that span, she has ridden her early success to two films starring Angelina Jolie and had trouble transitioning to a new generation (Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness) before settling comfortably in her own specialized niche.

Tomb Raider's art director Brian Horton talks about the responsibilities of game developers
THE coming Tomb Raider reboot will give gamers a mature and nuanced experience, its developers say, despite the controversy surrounding its content. Shipwrecked on an island in the Dragon’s Triangle and hunted by mercenaries, she is forced to kill to survive.

Tomb Raider and the Making of Lara Croft
Games seem to be thinking a bit more about killing lately, or at least they’re trying to make us think about it a bit more. Spec Ops: The Line earlier this year used the conventions of the first-person shooter to question how the genre encourages us to think. Far Cry 3’s traumatic first-kill moment kicks off a narrative that muses on what kind of person you become if you’re willing to murder for the sake of your friends. Tomb Raider, too, has shown us a character driven to kill by necessity, in self-defence, almost retching over the corpse of her assailant after she fights him off.

Miss Lara Croft is back again awaiting a world of discovery. Tomb Raider explores the intense and gritty origins of Lara Croft and her ascent from a frightened young women to a hard ass survivor.

The Perilous Process Of Reinventing Lara Croft
Lately, it seems everyone’s been talking about Lara Croft. The iconic star of the Tomb Raider franchise is getting a makeover in next year’s Tomb Raider reboot — or rather, a makeunder. The new game is a combination reboot and origin story, focusing on a young Lara’s fight for survival on a terrifying island lousy with hostile wildlife and human-sacrifice aficionados.

Crystal Dynamics on alleged Tomb Raider "rape": why is death "okay", but not sex?
CVG has an intriguing interview with Brian Horton, art director on Crystal Dynamics' Tomb Raider reboot. As is de rigueur for Tomb Raider chitchats, the conversation soon turns to gender, sexiness versus sexism and specifically, the so-called "attempted rape" scene alluded to in June. But the fine details are less of a retread than you might expect.

An Interview with Tomb Raider’s Noah Hughes
The biggest worry for most long-time Tomb Raider fans is whether or not the re-imagined Lara Croft captures the essence of what made the character so iconic in the first place – or if perhaps her rebirth is too much of a departure. We chatted to the game’s creative director, Noah Hughes, to put those fears to rest – and chat a little more about the gritty origin story.

Forgetting about older, classic titles could undermine the future of gaming
Against our best intentions, video games that get left by the wayside often stay unplayed and are ultimately forgotten. Games are a temporal art form. They can only be fully enjoyed within a short period of time after their release. Once a title is no longer considered new, many players distance themselves from it and discard it into the annals of history. Albeit with a few exceptions, many offerings’ influence wane significantly over time.

The Tomb Raider Reboot Could Use A T-Rex
I’m worried that Lara Croft won’t ever get to fight a dragon again. And that she’ll never go back to Atlantis. Everything we’ve seen so far from the gritty Tomb Raider reboot due out next year seems to indicate that the Crystal Dynamics is burning the fantasy trappings off of the action franchise. And that shouldn’t be the case, because Tomb Raider thrives on unreality.

There I was, bow drawn and breath held, ready to kill a beautiful deer I'd been tracking for about five minutes. Lara Croft muttered something like "I can do this," just before I let the arrow fly. Two more arrows felled the deer and I went back to the abandoned campsite Lara had found a few minutes earlier, where the meat would be cooked and Lara would brood alone.

Tomb Raider reboot makes you wonder if you want to play or watch Lara Croft
The feeling I got when I played a preview of the new Tomb Raider game was one of moving back and forth between a movie and a game. That’s exactly what happens when the scene shifts from a movie-like cinematic and the actual game play. The effect is a gripping, more personal story that could go a long way toward reviving Lara Croft as a top-tier video game franchise.

Tomb Raider almost had Enslaved-style escort storyline, fantasy elements
I made a case last year for game creators telling us more about what they cut during development, both to tackle anxieties about pre-planned DLC head-on and because what developers edit out speaks volumes, artistically, about what they leave in. Crystal Dynamics' global brand manager Karl Stewart has stepped up to the plate, revealing that the studio's forthcoming Tomb Raider reboot was once an ICO-style "offline co-op" experience.

The people behind the upcoming Tomb Raider reboot say they misspoke while using the word "rape" to refer to a scene in the game during an interview with Kotaku three weeks ago.

When gamers heard that Lara Croft might face rape situations in the upcoming Tomb Raider reboot, the fans went and freakin' exploded.

Lara Croft and the upcoming Tomb Raider – What do we know so far?
Everybody’s favourite archaeologist-turned-sex symbol, Lara Croft, is due to make her way back on to our consoles next year in the latest Tomb Raider title.

Dear Internet: Calm Yo Tits On Tomb Raider
We come now to the new Tomb Raider game. The internet’s given it a “wtf***ery?” response, which I think isn’t warranted. If you don’t like it, I’m not saying you’re wrong, but I do think the situation’s open to more debate than “You raped Lara Croft, motherf***ers!”

Crystal Dynamics' global brand director Karl Stewart has responded to concerns over comments made by Tomb Raider's executive producer Ron Rosenberg, saying that his colleague "misspoke", and that talk over the game's controversial 'rape' scene was "unfortunate".

Tomb Raider Controversy Shows We Aren’t Ready For Mature Themes In Games
My favorite movie is a Brazilian film called City of God. It’s set in a favela in Brazil and follows an ensemble of characters (including our protagonist, “Rocket”), as they grow from kids to adults in the titular City of God.

The Tomb Raider Reboot, And Why This Lady Won’t Be Playing It
To say that I am disappointed in the developers of the new Tomb Raider reboot would be a severe understatement. Their ballsy approach to advertising the game, as well as their almost desperate backtracking has nearly led to a broken nose from how hard I facepalmed in response to the above articles (Click the links). But the thing that confuses me more are the people who don’t seem to understand the “controversy” surrounding this game.

Sex sells, but women and videogames deserve better
The narrative direction of Crystal Dynamic's Tomb Raider reboot has proven to be great kindle for a raging Internet fire. A young, vulnerable Lara Croft is faced with a world that wants to break her down by any means necessary, including sexual violence. Lara must fend off rape, and no matter how much back-pedaling Crystal Dynamics attempts, the way her captors reach for her backside is all the proof we need.

Opinion: Sex, Lies and Tomb Raider
There's nothing wrong with sex. Hopefully more than a decade into the 21st century, everyone can agree on that. Furthermore, there's nothing wrong with using sex as a theme in video games, or even delving deep enough to touch on darker issues like sexual assault. That said, if a game developer is going to have the gall to touch on such a delicate topic, it better have its business together. If you're going to “go there” - go there. Own up to it, and have the artistic integrity to stand by your decision.

Full Tomb Raider Demo Will Air On GTTV
Crystal Dynamics turned a lot of heads at E3 with their gameplay demonstration for Tomb Raider. However, the general public only saw part of the full demo. You can see bits and pieces in the teaser video below.

There’s something about Lara
It’s somehow unsurprising that gaming’s chief female is the source of debate. It should be a suppose, considering just how irrelevant she’s become over the last few years, but apparently Lara Croft is someone the gaming world just can’t get over.

An Open Letter to the Guys Who Told Me They Want to See Lara Croft Get Raped
In last week’s conversation about the fact that Lara Croft will be threatened with sexual assault in the latest release of Tomb Raider, commenter Yitzhak Ben-Moshe wondered “One wonders how many sick puppies will let it go and watch the rape happen. Disgusting.” No sooner had he said that than two people showed up in the feed to validate his fears.

The Tomb Raider ‘rape’ controversy
When I watched the Tomb Raider 30-minute demonstration at E3 2012, I was completely floored away. The game became one of my top anticipated games to check out in 2013.

E3 2012: Tomb Raider Eyes-On: A Welcome Controversial Return
While the others were swayed by Splinter Cell: Blacklist’s slick wham-bam action, Tomb Raider endeared to me. In the heart of the Square-Enix booth, we were secreted away to see a portion of the game that didn’t feature all of the Lara Croft body torture that the conference displayed. What I saw inspired me to really give this game a shot after I’d largely ignored the franchise for the past sixteen years.

Big Games of 2013: Lara Croft Fans Getting New Tomb Raider Game and Movie
One of the big games of 2013 is coming from Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics in March. Armed with only the raw instincts and physical ability to push beyond the limits of human endurance, TOMB RAIDER delivers an intense and gritty story into the origins of Lara Croft and her ascent from a frightened young woman to a hardened survivor. The developer talks about the game from E3 2012 in this exclusive video interview.

Tomb Raider players may “evolve” to identify with Lara
Speaking to EDGE, Tomb Raider art director Brian Horton said Crystal Dynamics doesn’t want to make a game “about a girl” just so male gamers have something to fancy.

Lara Croft and rape stories: Breaking down the Bitch
For now, let’s talk about the shitstorm broiling over the pre-release material for the next Tomb Raider game, in which protagonist Lara Croft is retconned as a survivor of sexual and physical assault. This experience apparently made her the hypersexualised, mindlessly violent killing machine – sorry, "strong woman" – we know today.

Why the Lara Croft backlash is bad for games
Gender issues surrounding games are more controversial than ever. Add the word “rape” and they become incendiary. Following the Tomb Raider reboot’s executive producer Ron Rosenberg’s statement that Lara Croft will face the threat of rape from scavengers, as a narrative plot point engineered to show Lara’s vulnerability, the games community ignited in debate.

Lara Croft's 'Tomb Raider' Reboot Origin Story Misses The Mark
When I hear the name Lara Croft, I think "badass." The (virtual) woman is a brilliant archaeologist, she can jump into hand-to-hand combat matches with the best of them, she carries her gun in a garter holster and Angelina Jolie played her in a movie. In my opinion, the girl doesn't really need any help from anyone. Apparently, the heads behind "Tomb Raider" -- the video game -- beg to differ. A revamped Lara Croft is on her way, and this heroine needs a protector.

Tomb Raider Preview (PS3)
I was more hyped for Crystal Dynamic’s Tomb Raider than any other game going into E3, so it goes without saying that my expectations for this title were impossibly high. That said, the minute Crystal’s senior producer Kyle Peschel started walking us through an extended section of the game, I knew without a doubt that this would be one of next year’s biggest hits.

You’ll ‘Want To Protect’ The New, Less Curvy Lara Croft
In the past, Lara Croft didn’t need protecting. She was a fearless daredevil, a crack shot in short shorts with enough attitude to scare off a pack of bloodthirsty gorillas.
But in the upcoming Tomb Raider reboot, things will be different. She hasn’t become that woman yet. And executive producer Ron Rosenberg says you’ll want to keep her safe.

'Tomb Raider' blends genres like crazy in its E3 demo
At E3 today, I saw demos for Tomb Raider and 007 Legends. The two differ in many ways, but in one they're polar opposites: In 007, James Bond rarely speaks except in cut-scenes, to the point that it seems weird when his friend speaks to him and he doesn't respond; in Tomb Raider, Lara Croft is more or less an action game Tamagotchi, describing everything she's doing, talking to herself like a crazy person, and breathing loudly when she doesn't have anything to say.

E3 2012: An Explorer In Trouble In These "Tomb Raider" Screens
Bruised, battered, menaced, hungry, and alone, Lara Croft's upcoming adventure in the Tomb Raider reboot is a far cry from her PSOne and PC adventures from the way back. All you needed back then was a couple of guns, some sass, and maybe a few rampaging dinos to keep it interesting for players for the early 3D action-adventure game.

A 21 year old Lara in the new Tomb Raider. Nice.
Over the years plenty of us have admired the physique of Tomb Raider's main character Lara Croft. The History of Video Games as Movies
It goes without saying that some of the big blockbuster video games are becoming more profitable than some of the biggest films of the year and I know myself, I have sat through cut scenes and thought, “This should be a movie.” So it’s understandable why there are so many games that become films, the transition seems logical.

Sexy Tomb Raider Lara Croft Cosplay
An exceptionally fine cosplay of Lara Croft by one of the team working on the reboot is lately attracting attention for its unreasonable sexiness amongst appreciative gamers the world over. Tomb Raider Trilogy - Baby, I'm So, So Sorry!
Those of you keeping track at home will remember that Lara won my heart back in Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light. after having spurned her advances over the last 15 years. Yeah, I loved her and her short shorts like no one else way back in 1996 (what red-blooded teenager didn't stare at this cover and… well… you know) and the original Tomb Raider was pretty impressive at the time. I never was able to get into the series after that though, and as the reviews for the sequels got worse and worse, I forgot about Lara entirely.

Videogame classics: reboot, reimagine, renovate, or just remember?
One of the big stars emerging in the post-E3 2011 buzz is none other than Lara Croft. It's been a long time since she demanded the spotlight with such urgency. But this is not the Lara we've come to know over her many adventures. Nor is it even some "new and improved" model. After resuscitating the all but dead corpse of Ms. Croft with three very well done Tomb Raider games (Tomb Raider: Legend, Anniversary, and Underworld), developer Crystal Dynamics has thrown the old lady out in favor of a total reboot of the franchise. It's a bold approach, and one that seems poised to pay off in a big way for them.

Which Hair Products Would Lara Croft Use?
Lara Croft is a tomb raider. She is fearless in her quests. Croft will enter the most hazardous tombs and ruins without hesitation. However, as a woman and an aristocrat at that, she likes to keep up appearances. Her signature style is sexy. Her weapons are lethal. Her long hair up in a ponytail or braid always looks immaculate.

What I Want from the Tomb Raider Reboot
The first Tomb Raider has not aged well. Its reboot is coming in a time where many of the issues that plagued early PS1 games have been fixed. But Crystal Dynamics' upcoming Tomb Raider reboot needs to take the beloved character and build a game worthy of her storied history, taking cues -- good and bad -- from other adventurers.

E3: Tomb Raider Impressions
Before we start this preview of the Tomb Raider reboot, I need you to do something for me: completely disregard everything you ever thought or knew about the old Lara Croft. You can also forget about locking your butler in the freezer in your mansion (I know, I’ll miss that too).

E3 2011: Tomb Raider Preview
I don't like Tomb Raider.
Probably not the best way to start up a preview of a Tomb Raider game, that, but it's true. Despite a few exceptions, I cannot abide the bleedin' Tomb Raider series. After the first couple of games the phenomenal sense of place vanished and the puzzles and platforming became all too familiar, and the combat has never been good.

E3 2011: Tomb Raider Eyes-On Preview
Pain, self-doubt and fear are just a few of the sentiments portrayed by the young, 21-year-old Ms. Croft in Crystal Dynamics newest Tomb Raider game. It's no longer an adventure about the iconic buxom archeologist, but an origins story, a rebirth of how Lara Croft comes to be, well, Lara Croft. What you saw at the Microsoft press conference was but a glimpse at something bigger. Sure, there were a ton of quick time events, but when the game actually makes you fear for Lara's life, you know you have an experience worth exploring on your hands.

Tomb Raider Hopes To Recreate A Gaming Icon

Tomb Raider preview – Lara Begins
2006’s Tomb Raider Legend was a great game and one of the most successful reboots, both creatively and commercially, in the industry’s history. But while it successfully updated the Tomb Raider formula, it never really changed it significantly, so by the time Anniversary and Underworld came around things were already beginning to seem tired again.

E3! Tomb Raider - Womankind Is In Your Hands

Tomb Raider E3 2011 Preview
Before Crystal Dynamics' new Tomb Raider, few would have associated Lara Croft with the survival horror genre. With the new game, one of the most recognizable ladies in gaming goes through another reboot, following the studios' successful digital title Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, which was a major departure from the Tomb Raider most of us are accustomed to.

Innovations had gamers walking on a cloud at E3
First James Bond, then Dr. Who. Now the latest British action hero to be reborn? Lara Croft.

E3 2011 Feature: Tomb Raider Preview
About a year after the well-received release of Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, it seemed that we wouldn’t be hearing about the (in)famous tomb raider for a long time. Imagine the surprise then, when a brand new Tomb Raider title was announced in December last year. Actually being billed as more of a reboot, this iteration of Tomb Raider features a 21 year-old Lara Croft who finds herself shipwrecked on an island. Given her age and inexperience, the game’s developer has said that Lara will be much more vulnerable and afraid this time around - a stark contrast to the character we have come to know previously. Desperation is the name of the game here, and Lara’s tale will be a journey of learning and overcoming self-doubt, represented by gameplay elements such as gaining abilities.

Best of E3 2011
E3 may be over, but its influence will be felt until next year. So what came out on top? Below is our list of the best of the best from E3 2011.

Crystal Dynamics 'not making a second' Lara Croft game, focus is on Tomb Raider
Last year, we spoke with Crystal Dynamics' global brand manager Karl Stewart, about the studio's new three team structure: the "pillar" team was hard at work on the new Tomb Raider reboot, one of the highlights of this year's E3; the experimental team was working on smaller games under the "Lara Croft" banner; and the brand team, which looks after the lucrative Tomb Raider brand and, ostensibly, oversees projects like the upcoming movie.

Tomb Raider – E3 Impressions
Last week, Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics launched a pre-E3 trailer of their newest make-over of Lara Croft in Tomb Raider, which didn’t have any problem capturing our attention. And after our front row sneak peak with the mega publisher, we wouldn’t be exaggerating to say that Lara has never EVER looked better.

New Tomb Raider Screenshots Revealed
Following the first demonstration of a playable build of the forthcoming Tomb Raider reboot at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) earlier this week, Square Enix has revealed a selection of brand new screenshots taken from the game. Tomb Raider is currently in development for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC, and set for release in 2012.

E3: Exploring the Rebooted Tomb Raider
There is always a debate about what to change when you're rebooting a video game. On one hand, super fans don't want you to change a thing. If you change nothing, people wonder why you bothered. Well, there are some changes in store for Lara Croft. Tomb Raider is getting a reboot, and it's an origin story. Oh, and Lara doesn't look quite the same. We got a behind-closed-doors preview at E3 today. This one is going to cause some debate.

Lara Croft Models Will 'Never Happen Again', Origin Story Movie Will
I can barely ask the question before Tomb Raider’s Karl Stewart has an answer.
“That will never happen again,” he says. “We want to create a visceral experience. We want people to look at Lara and see the psychological aspect of her character.

“Having a real Lara out there doing cartwheels kind of destroys that.”

Previews// E3 2011: Tomb Raider
Crystal Dynamics is revitalising the Tomb Raider franchise - for a second time. We all remember how disappointing Underworld was, but lest we forget that the Square Enix studio was also responsible for the critically acclaimed Legend.

9th June, 2011

There hasn’t been a true new Lara Croft title in a number of years now, as what was once an iconic character has become somewhat saturated, lacking thrill in gameplay and execution. With self-titled Tomb Raider, Square Enix aims to reboot the franchise, to the true meaning of the world. This is the story of how Lara became the action girl that we’ve all come to know. Starring Lara at a rather early and fragile age, players will see her transform into a survivor as she is thrown into an extreme situation.

E3: Tomb Raider (360, PS3)
I had a chance to see the new Tomb Raider behind closed doors today. One of the developers showed off 2 different areas of the game. This game looks absolutely stunning with super-detailed graphics and realistic portrayals of emotion. You actually feel for Lara as she's going through some pretty dangerous and scary situations. If you watched Microsoft's E3 press conference earlier this week you would have seen the first area shown to me, but I'll go over some of the details anyway.

E3 2011: New TOMB RAIDER Images Show Dangerous In-Game Environments
Square Enix has released a batch of new Tomb Raider images, giving fans a good look at the hostile environment Lara Croft is faced with after being shipwrecked. The game is expected to ship Fall 2012.

E3 2011 first look: Tomb Raider
Tomb Raider is returning and this time it may be worth your time. Developer Crystal Dynamics took us through Square Enix's reimagining of Lara Croft at E3 2011. Our first impressions are below.

Eyes On: Tomb Raider
Crystal Dynamics’ behind closed doors gameplay demonstration of Lara Croft’s debut adventure (chronologically, at least) might well have been based on ‘early code’ but you couldn’t tell – the graphics were exemplary and the audio design is really pushing the boundaries of what we’d expect from a videogame. Sure, it’s clear the team have been keeping an eye on Naughty Dog of late but then Uncharted’s roots were never really that well covered up anyway – for gamers who love adventure, there’s clearly going to be a bit of choice this generation.

CORE Design Limited
The originators of the blockbuster Tomb Raider franchise, Core has a long history of titles across multiple format dating back to the Amiga systems. The company was brought into Eidos after the success of Tomb Raider.

Tomb Raider 9: Gritty gameplay demo at E3
We’ve already reported earlier that the next installment in the Lara Croft saga, Tomb Raider 9, will be much grittier than previous installments of the series. We didn’t know just how much grittier it would be until we saw video of the E3 demo for Tomb Raider 9.

E3 2011 Loves New Look Lara Croft
In Monday’s list of games we want to find out more about at E3, we said how those who were tired of the same old Tomb Raider formula could look forward to having it broken up and redefined. Well, that’s proven to be the case as developer Crystal Dynamics seems to have crafted something that really resonates with its audience.

Tomb Raider Preview
Needless to say, Lara Croft has been freshly redesigned. Her days as a buxom and sly lass of the 90s have come and gone, and out of her ashes rises someone grittier and noticeably toned-down. The younger Lara stands out in the hands-off E3 demo (an extended version of what was shown at Microsoft's press conference) as a resourceful but scared kid straight out of college – a far cry from the Croft we've come to know.

Speaking to PC Gamer at E3, Tomb Raider’s Global Brand Director, Karl Stewart, has explained how his team have looked for influences outside of gaming for the reboot of Tomb Raider; specifically at the techniques TV series use to develop characters over an extended period of time.

E3 2011: Lara Croft Faces Her Toughest Fight for Survival in Tomb Raider Reboot
Lara Croft has been through a lot over her career as an explorer. She has been chased by plenty of boulders and has avoided many other various hazards in search for some of the world's ancient artifacts. But none of that can compare to the abuse Lara will be receiving in the Tomb Raider reboot, set to come out in the fall of next year. In this exclusive interview, Head of Crystal Dynamics Darrell Gallagher talks about the dangers Lara Croft will face and what she can do to overcome them.

Lara Croft Meets Batman and Nathan Drake
With the success of Assassin's Creed, Batman: Arkham Asylum, and Uncharted, the Tomb Raider series has a lot of competition in the crowded adventure genre. But with the exception of Guardian of Light, Lara's exploits have seen many changes through the years. Fortunately developer Crystal Dynamics understands that Tomb Raider needs to change, and that's evident with their upcoming franchise reboot titled simply Tomb Raider.

The Interrogation Room: Tomb Raider
Ryan Scott, Executive Editor: Based on everything I've seen and heard about the impending Tomb Raider reboot, it's turned into a pretty hardcore adventure/survival game. Series heroine Lara Croft certainly looks like she's been through hell and back. What did you think of what you saw?

Tomb Raider: to learn her worth, she must survive hell
Watching the opening sequences of the newly rebooted Tomb Raider game is painful. The entire demo is painful, with the developers taking delight in putting the 21-year-old Lara Croft through some of the worst situations imaginable. While the game will take place in a number of different locations, the sections we were shown brought to mind films like Sanctum and The Descent. The entire context was weird, as the press sat in front of the televisions eating mini-hamburgers while a young girl was all but tortured on the screen.

E3: Tomb Raider
When you think of ways to describe Lara Croft, "scared" probably isn't the first word that pops to mind, but that's exactly what the young heroine of the upcoming Tomb Raider reboot is - and with good reason. She's just 21 years old, setting out on her very first adventure, and has yet to acquire the many skills that we know her older self to have.

Tomb Raider - Preview
After six years of conjuring elaborate puzzles, death traps and dungeons, and four years of drowning, maiming and fracturing every bone in the body of one of video game's enduring icons, Crystal Dynamics is, at long last, about to make its very first Tomb Raider game.

The Reinvention Of Lara Croft
No Tomb Raider reboot has been as substantial, none could be as meaningful. In delivering to gamers a young, inexperienced Lara Croft, Crystal Dynamics doesn’t seek to just reboot the series, but to make it’s heroine into something we as gamers connect with emotionally.

A Closer Look At The New Tomb Raider [E3 2011]
Of all the new announcements in the gaming industry so far with E3 this week, one has stuck out for me, so I decided it needed a bit more attention than just a little blurb. Crystal Dynamics has been hard at work, polishing up the new Tomb Raider reboot that we’ve all heard about. The more I look at this game, the less I actually think it’s a reboot, and more of a brand new title with a revamped character that we all know.

E3: Lara Croft Gets a 'Tomb Raider' Video Game Reboot
Just as Hollywood is giving Lara Croft a big-screen reboot, developer Crystal Dynamics is introducing a very young Lara Croft on her very first adventure in Tomb Raider. The new game for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC will ship in fall 2012, but is making its debut at game publisher Square Enix's E3 booth this week.

'Tomb Raider' Trailer Looks Gorgeous, Hints At Lara's Grittier Style
We still know very, very little about Crystal Dynamics' upcoming "Tomb Raider" reboot – or prequel, depending on how you look at it. We know the game takes place before the original 1996 title, and you're placed in the role of a still relatively inexperienced, 21-year old Lara Croft. Now, mere days before we're undoubtedly given quite a bit more information about the game, Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics have released a premiere trailer that looks amazing, even if it's completely devoid of gameplay.

'Tomb Raider' game dated for 2012 in cinematic trailer
Square Enix has released a debut trailer for the Tomb Raider reboot ahead of the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles and confirmed that Lara Croft's next outing is scheduled for sometime between September and November 2012.

New 'Tomb Raider' trailer features young Lara Croft... who looks exactly like Natalie Portman. (Or Jessica Biel? Or Lacey Chabert?)
Remember that wacky Final Fantasy movie, where one of the main characters looked exactly like Ben Affleck but was voiced by Alec Baldwin? There’s a similar cognitive dissonance at work in the trailer for 2012′s Tomb Raider videogame reboot, in which the iconic Lara Croft gets de-aged.

Makers of new Tomb Raider talk about rebooting iconic character
To moviegoers, Lara Croft is the gun-toting archaeologist portrayed by Angelina Jolie. To hardcore gamers, she’s the titillating protagonist who changed the face of video games. Either way, the Tomb Raider franchise has long been overdue for a serious makeover.

E3 2011: Looking forward to… Tomb Raider
Tomb Raider, the franchise, has been saddled with its fair share of baggage – namely The Angel of Darkness. Since then, new franchise developers, Crystal Dynamics, have done nothing but release quality Tomb Raider offerings, as well as the exceptional Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light. But, despite their track record, the Tomb Raider stigma has continued to loiter in many a gamer’s memory. Enter Tomb Raider, the reboot, a place to hopefully start fresh.

Tomb Raider Trailer Next Week; 2 Stills Released
Both the Tomb Raider film series and video game franchise are set for fresh beginnings, with grittier and more realistic reboots that will follow a much younger Lara Croft. Square Enix has been having a bit of trouble as of late, which has resulted in a net income of -$148.4 million for the fiscal year which ended on the 31st of March, 2011. However, back in 2009 when they purchased a beleaguered Eidos, things were starting to look up for the company. It also saw their first increase in net income for a considerable amount of time.

Crystal Dynamics: Tomb Raider Reboot “Felt Necessary”
Crystal Dynamics, developer of the upcoming Tomb Raider reboot, has said that the studio went back to the drawing board with the iconic series because it “felt necessary” to do so.

Rather than portray the experienced adventurer of games past, the new Tomb Raider puts players in control of a young Lara Croft, fresh out of university, who finds herself shipwrecked on a Japanese island, a nervous young girl more interested in getting out of dangerous caverns than into them. That, according to studio head Darrell Gallagher, was an essential step in Crystal Dynamics’ bid return the series to its status of old.
